Why is Riot Games phasing out Summoner Names in League of Legends?
Riot Games is phasing out the usage of Summoner Names and moving all players exclusively to Riot IDs “to create a more unified experience” according to anofficial statement by the Riot staff.
Over time, the story of Runeterra, League of Legends, and Summoner’s Rift has evolved. Initially, players acted as Summoners who brought the first set of Champions to the Rift.
However, this concept became limiting for the world and its characters. In 2014, the focus shifted to the Champions themselves rather than the all-powerful Summoners.
Although you may still hear the term “Summoner” in a few places like occasional voice lines, references, and notably in the name of the Rift, it no longer fits with the lore, especially when it comes to players’ Summoner Names. This update aims to align better with the current world of League of Legends, create a smoother experience across all of Riot’s games, and simplify the technical aspects of how names function.
