NRG Esports welcomes back Chet as coach for VCT 2023 season
A familiar face returns to NRG.
NRG Esports is about to finally reveal its rebuilt Valorant roster for the VCT 2023 season.
The North American esports organization is holding a “Valorant roster reveal week,” where new members of the team will be announced throughout the week.
The first in what is set to be a slew of blockbuster announcements is former OpTic Gaming coachChet “Chet” Singh, who will be leading their team next year in the Americas league.
NRG Esports signs former OpTic Gaming coach Chet for VCT 2023
The 26-year-old is no stranger to NRG, having coached the organization’s CS:GO team in 2018. Chet’s most notable run with NRG came in 2019, when he helped the team secure a 3rd-4th place finish at the StarLadder Berlin Major.
Chet eventually went on to coach NRG and TSM’s Valorant squads when Riot Games’ shooter was released. But he would find the most success with OpTic Gaming’s powerhouse squad — widely regarded as the most consistent team in 2022. Under his watch, OpTic became one of the most dominant rosters in global Valorant, winningMasters Reykjavik 2022and then securing top-three finishes at the next two LAN events.
Unfortunately for OpTic, they did not acquire a partnership spot in the Americas league for the VCT 2023 season despite their incredible tournament runs, leaving the storied team in search of a new home.
Chet, alongside the rest of OpTic’s Valorant roster, all became free agents after Valorant Champions 2022. However, the OpTic core is expected to be sticking together, according to a report last month fromDot Esports’ George Geddes.
NRG is now set to bolster its ranks withPujan “FNS” Mehta, Austin “crashies” Roberts, and Victor “Victor” Wong, the OpTic trio that has comprised the core of the team since late 2020, when they were still playing under the Envy banner.
The three OpTic players will joinSam “s0m” Oh, the only player NRG retained in the VCT offseason. The last member expected to join the roster, according to aseparate report by Geddes, is FunPlus Phoenix star Ardis “ardiis” Svarenieks.
The Latvian standout officially became a free agent on November 7, when he wasreleased by FPX. Similar to OpTic, FPX was not able to secure a partnership spot in the EMEA league next year.
NRG Esports’ Valorant roster will make its international debut when the VCT 2023 season kicks off with a30-team international LANin São Paulo, Brazil next February.
