He noted that many of his characters, including Ace, Nami, and Luffy, have deceased or absent mothers. According to Oda, “mother” is the antithesis of “adventure.”

Luffy’s closest mother figure is his grandfather’s friend, Dadan. She played a significant role in raising him alongside his brothers Ace and Sabo during their childhood in Foosha Village in East Blue. Despite her tough exterior, Dadan deeply cares for Luffy and considers him one of her own.
