Monkey D. Luffy, the beloved protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece franchise, possesses an indomitable spirit and an unwavering determination to pursue his dreams. Inaki Godoy, the actor chosen to portray Luffy in the live-action adaptation, shares a similar passion and enthusiasm in real life.
This was made evident in a video released by Netflix, the streaming company and producers of the One Piece live action series.
In the two-minute video, the Luffy live action actor, along with his talented co-stars Emily Rudd (Nami), Mackenyu Arata (Zoro), Taz Skylar (Sanji), and Jacob Romero (Usopp), gathered to experience the thrill of watching the One Piece live action teaser for the very first time.

As the teaser played, an emotional wave washed over the 19-year-old Mexican actor, prompting tears to well up in his eyes. Inaki couldn’t contain his emotions and found himself wiping away tears by the end of the video. In a heartwarming display of support and camaraderie, his fellow actors surrounded him, offering consoling embraces.
Mackenyu acknowledged the difficulties they encountered throughout the filming process and empathized with Inaki.
“It was something, guys,” Inaki said. “You should be very proud. Thank you for being my friends.”
Filming for the One Piece live-action series commenced in January 2022, a time when the world was still grappling with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The cast and production crew traveled to Cape Town Film Studios in South Africa, where theybrought humongous One Piece ships to lifeas part of the main set. Under the guidance ofOne Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, showrunner Steven Maeda, and producer Matt Owens, they all worked together to complete filming for the first season by August 2022.
Initially slated for an exclusive Netflix release in the summer of 2023, the live action adaptation encountered a slight delay. However, Oda and the Netflix team reassured fans by affirming their commitment to delivering a high-quality production. In aprevious handwritten update, Oda expressed that the show’s launch would be postponeduntil he was fully satisfied with its outcome, ensuring that it met the expectations of loyal viewers.
Despite the setbacks, the show has regained momentum, as Netflix unveiled the official release date for the One Piece live-action series, set for August 31 later this year.
